Why Your Popular Artistes Loses Out of Hip-Hop World Awards

In recent weeks, there have been a lot of controversies surrounding the choice of nominees in this year edition of the annual Hip Hop World Awards which is scheduled to take place in Abuja on Saturday, May 16, 2009.
In some quarters, accusing fingers are being pointed at the judges/organizers of the Award for being partial in the selection of the nominees.
According to the release from the judges of the Award were tailored to uphold the credibility of the Awards in the interest of the general public. According to the organizers
“Our nomination list was drawn from all musical works and materials released between December 2007 and December 2008.”
“Songs and albums in the popular categories were screened for popularity around the country and not in particular centers or states”.
“All videos directed by foreign persons were not nominated; this is our initiative to encourage local directors and productions”.
“We also excluded songs that glorify scam, alcohol abuse, narcotics and promote wanton sex from this year’s Awards. These songs would have made the list if they had clean or radio edited versions and censored videos; excluding them from our nominees’ list is our own contribution towards the development of a socially responsible music industry and the society at large”. also that, “In an industry where most albums are not properly released into the market, it becomes challenging for the judges to know the exact release date of all songs. For this reason, artistes should endeavor to indicate when their musical works are released at the reverse side of their album cover; which is the practice all over the world.”
The maiden edition of Hip Hop World Awards tagged “Get Ready for a Revolution” was held in 2006. Subsequent editions have proved beyond reasonable doubt that the Award is the most credible Awards in Nigeria. The theme of this year’s edition is ‘A Prize to die for’ and intending to make the Awards worthy of its title.
